Biography

Léo Maillet is a 5th year PhD student working in Chinese and Political studies under the co-supervision of Laure Zhang (University of Geneva) and Stéphane Dudoignon (CNRS/GSRL, Paris). His thesis addresses the evolutions of the historical and social background of Uyghur naan-baking since the late nineteenth century, as well as the socio-political dimensions of the practice and transmission of this craft amongst Uyghurs in diaspora. Based on several fieldwork inquiries conducted in Inner China (2017, 2019) and Turkey (2021, 2022), it combines anthropological and historical approaches. Through the analysis of Uyghur, Chinese and Turkish sources, the thesis questions the way Uyghur naan baking know-how is subjected to multiple (re-) appropriations inside and outside East Turkestan / XUAR.
