English Translation

The light of heaven of the Naqshbandi Path, the Moon of Truth of the Mujaddidi Khalidi Mahmudi[1] [branch], our shaykh and role model, the Renewer of the fourteenth century [of the Hegira], Shaykh al-Hajj Ahmad Afandi b. Mustafa al-Talali.

He was born, may Allah be pleased with him, in the year 1251[/1835–36] in the town [balda] of Tala, [which is] connected by a fortress with the nearby town of Jar. He had not a shred of worldly goods at home, being like a prophet and a saint in his asceticism (zuhd). During his youthful years, he studied the traditional and applied (al-naqliyya wa’l-ʻaqliyya) sciences. He spent most of his time studying in the village of Ilisu with the scholar (ʿālim) Ismaʻil Afandi, but he had a passion and desire for [the study of] hidden knowledge (al-ʿilm al-bāin). He had long sought a perfect guide (al-muršid al-kāmil) who would bring him to the ultimate goal [of Sufism], until he heard of the šayḫ al-ḥajj Ahmad Afandi al-Almali, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, and had a burning desire to meet him. Of this his desire the said shaykh came to know and said: ‘O Mulla Ahmad, my son, I see that you will not get what you seek from me. You should visit Shaykh Mahmud Afandi al-Almali who is now in his village. Go to him and ask him to be your instructor.’ [Ahmad Afandi at-Talali] further recounts: ‘I set out, however, with the intention of seeing not Shaykh Mahmud Afandi but Shaykh Ahmad al-Almali. I arrived at the village of Qakh in order to proceed from there to Almalo[2]. There, I met a man whom I did not know, who asked me, “Where are you going?” I replied: “I am going to Shaykh al-Hajj Ahmad al-Almali.” Then he said to me: “The Venerable Shaykh Mahmud Afandi al-Almali is now here in Qakh. Go to him.” I said “alright” but did not go to him and hurried to Almalo. When I reached the centre of Qakh, the same man blocked my way and said: “Hadn’t I told you to go to Mahmud Afandi?” I replied: “I am coming” and he moved away from me, but I headed towards Almalo. When I reached the lower part of the village, the same man again got in my way and said: “Hey you, didn’t I tell you to visit Shaykh Mahmud Afandi?” Then I said to him: “I don’t know where he is now.” He said: “Come with me”, and I went with him until I reached the gate of Hajji Baba Afandi al-Qakhi. He said to me: “Come [into the courtyard], I will go to that room. Shaykh Mahmud Afandi is there.” I went into the courtyard, looked around there and, after a while, a tall man came out of the house. He pointed at me and said: “Sit down and [wait], I will come after performing the ablutions. Then he came back, called me over, sat me down opposite him and started asking questions about me, then he asked me: “Mulla Ahmad, do you have an instructor in the Path? I replied no. Then he said: “Son, why do you say you have no mentor? Don’t you know who woke you up in the middle of the night?” Before, for many nights some man had touched me in my sleep with his foot, but I did not know who he was. Then [Shaykh Mahmud al-Almali] said to me: “I am that man. I have been watching you for seven years until today. Why do your lips utter such words?” This surprised me. He enveloped me with his divine love so that I drowned in it. Then he asked me: “Son, Mulla Ahmad, who was this man who brought you to me?” I replied: “I don’t know.” He smiled and I thought that this man was [the Prophet] Khidr,[3] peace be upon him. Then the shaykh instructed al-Hajj Baba Afandi to receive me in his house and give me what I needed.

May Allah Almighty reward him for his diligence and may He forgive his sins and accept his good deeds, Ameen!

His miraculous deeds [karāmāt] and incidents from his life

Our shaykh was deeply respected and revered by his aspirants [murids] and answered their entreaties, and this deep respect and reverence for his shaykh improved the aspirants in their education and benefited them.

At the same time, he was also kind and sedate, far from any reprehensible character traits. He was a model, held up as an example of kindness, moderation, generosity and remarkable nobility. When we came to him, he was aware of every thought that crossed our minds. He would take in his blessed hand the book Miftāḥ al-qulūb, look into it and say whatever was on our minds. He would say to me: “Son, it is difficult for me to tell you with my own mouth because you do not believe anything except what is written in books. Do you think what I say with my mouth is a lie? It is not, by Allah! If it were not for the weakness of love and sincerity in the hearts of the scholars, I would have brought them to [high] degrees even in forty days.”

In instructing the aspirants he was an amazing man of his era and knew a way to benefit them. He educated each of them in a manner appropriate to him. He spoke to people according to their intelligence, to their level of thinking, he interacted with people with knowledge of their [nature], and was courteous even to infidels. Because of the large number of people who came to him, his gate was like the gate of the great Imam and Caliph of the faithful, the [Ottoman] Sultan. He worked hard all the time, directed his inner eye (tawajjah) to his aspirants and transmitted to them the radiance of divine light (fayḍ).

After completing [his training] under Shaykh Mahmud Afandi, [Ahmad al-Talali] “got up on the carpet of guidance” in his village of Tala. Then some unholy men of his village and district (maalla) began to build intrigues against him. The Russian ruler of the district [wilāya][4] sent him to Siberia, to one of the distant Turkic cities[5], where he remained for some years. He once said: ‘When I was in exile, I had a dream that I was standing on the shore of the sea, on which a ship was sailing towards me. On it, I saw three people whose faces shone with light. As the ship approached me, I looked closely and recognised one. It was our shaykh, Mahmud Afandi al-Almali, may Allah sanctify his soul. I did not recognise the others. My shaykh shouted to me: “We are coming to take you away.” I exclaimed: “O Shaykh, how shall I go up [to the ship] when there is water between us?” Then the shaykh stretched out his blessed right hand and carried me to the ship and we sailed to end of the sea. I asked him: “Who are these people?” He replied: “My son, one is Prophet Khidr, the other Prophet Elias[6], peace be upon them both.” When I woke up, I was happy, for my Lord had made me aware of the imminent deliverance from the hands of the infidels. Then came the news of it and I got my freedom. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds!’

The son [of Ahmad al-Talali] also told me that his father, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, had said to him: ‘I was under the guidance (ḫiḍma)[7] of my shaykh Mahmud Afandi for only six months. [During that time] he brought me to all the states and standings (al-aḥwāl wa’l-maqāmāt),[8] mysteries and miraculous deeds (karāmāt).

I was told by my noble brother, the Guide (al-muršid) ʻUthman Afandi al-Tsakhuri, that he had heard from [Ahmad Afandi] the following: ‘Once, when I was in Istanbul, by the will of Allah Almighty, I suddenly lost consciousness and was in a state of annihilation[9] for eight days. When I came to, I asked my friends about my condition. They told me this and that. I was very happy about it and fell asleep already in peace. In my dream, I saw my shaykh Mahmud Afandi, who said to me: “My son, are you surprised by your condition? Go to such a Friday mosque and you will see a servant [of Allah] who takes two breaths in a year.” The next day, I found that mosque, went into it and, in a corner, saw the said man. Near him were standing on guard two men appointed by the Sultan. This man did not sense my presence. Then I asked about his condition from the two men who were standing on guard. They told me that the man takes a breath only twice a year. Then, I thought that people like this man had attained a higher degree of holiness than the shaykhs. Then, my shaykh looked at me and asked: “What are you thinking about?” I said this and that. He replied: “My son, what you are thinking is not really the case. People [like this man] bring up their spiritual essence. The shaykhs, on the other hand, along with their spiritual essence, also take care of all the worlds, and they, by their degree of holiness, stand above [the former] and are more perfect.”’ End.

I have been told by [Shaykh] al-Zahuri from the words of his teacher [al-Talali] that, when the latter was under the guidance of his shaykh, he saw in a dream as if he himself were standing on a high mountain, the foot of which was a deep and dark gorge where there were many people. Al-Talali had on his hands a long rope radiating light, and [with the help of the rope] he had to pull out one by one [all the people at the bottom of the gorge] until no one remained there. After this, I woke up and found myself in the village of Almalo, in a guest house. And now, that is in the year 1315[/1897–98], I have witnessed that those people whom I dreamed at the bottom of that ravine have become my murids and achieved through me a high degree [in Sufism]. That dream was an indication of that event. The end.

He also recounted that Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahim Afandi al-Damurani — may Allah purify his soul — came to our shaykh [al-Talali] and said: ‘I have seen in a dream that Islam is held on our shoulders and yours. And I was led to believe that I had become one of the two Axes [qub] and you the other. I told him that the qub degree[10] was given to us but taken back, and there is none left for you or me. We will both perform the hajj in the same year. You will make the hajj intending to stay there and I will return after the pilgrimage. And when I read on his face a trace of disagreement with my words, I said to him: “O Shaykh! On your way to the hajj, accept what is appointed for you by Allah Almighty.” Then, years later, while going on hajj, I happened to meet him on a ship and took him with me and reminded him of what I had said to him in my house. After the hajj I returned, but he stayed there, in the city of Medina. It happened as he said.’ The end.

Our shaykh [al-Talali] had made hajj four times.

Of the unusual qualities peculiar to him, which was not peculiar to many other perfect guides, even his shaykh Mahmud Afandi al-Almali is the obedience of the greatest scholars to him, the following of the wisest men after him, the sincerity towards him [by] all creatures from all parts of the earth. Most of them showed sincere sympathy for him. He had murids in all corners of the Caucasus and the Ottoman Empire,[11] so that in each of these regions his successors (ḫulafāʾ) remained, who became mentors of murids, starting from Chechnya, Circassia, Gazi Gumukh, Avaria, Küra, Haydak, Akhta, Bashla[12], Shirvan, up to the regions of Jar, may Allah show him and all of us his mercy, and may the light of divine essence (fayḍ) illuminate us, and may Allah Almighty reward him [with a better lot] than the tutor bestows on his murid, the shaykh, his follower (sālik). May anyone who mentions in his supplication (duʿā) the name of his shaykh al-Almali, may he abide with him always!

[Ahmad al-Talali], may Allah have mercy on him, was a man of large build, meek, patient, merciful, intelligent and perfect. The cleverest and most understanding people were asking him for advice in matters of governance, even the disbelievers from foreign lands turned to him in their disputes — may Allah Almighty leave them without help. He concealed and forgave the faults of his murids and was always obliging in the education of his children and students, so that the noblest and most venerable of his time said of him: ‘We have not seen any shaykh who was more perfect than him in the education of his murids.’ He mentored his murids individually, drawing on his positive qualities of character. When I was alone with him in his room, he would say to me: ‘Oh, my son Shuʻayb Afandi! This is the last time [before the coming of the End of the World] and we need to be extremely vigilant, keeping an eye on the desires of people who are not out of line with the Sharia. Otherwise, I would not have seen the spiritual appearance of each of my murids, some of whom will appear as men, while others will appear as either a dog or a pig, or a fox or a lion, according to the moral inclination of each. After the affairs of our ancestors have been concentrated in the hands of the infidels (kuffār), and many informers have appeared in our time, including even among the murids, we shall submit all our affairs and those of our ancestors [to the judgment] of Allah Almighty.

He used to say: ‘O my son! If a perfect scholar would come to me [with the purpose of receiving my] guidance with sincere intention and love, and if he would be before me like a deceased in the hands of one who washes his body, then I would bring him to a high standing (maqām) of those close to Allah Almighty. He would know the Almighty within forty days at most. However, you are a society of scholars without perfect sincerity, wholesome love and friendliness.’

He was studded in his heart with the jewels of the meanings of [the beautiful] Ninety-Nine Names [of the Almighty]. And he was full of praiseworthy moral qualities.

[Ahmad al-Talali] — may his soul be sanctified — performed many miraculous deeds (karāmāt), he possessed many extraordinary abilities, noble rectitude. The most perfect [of his abilities] was that he was followed by scholars who [subsequently] benefited from it, as they themselves described it in their books, writing on his actions and assignments. [Ahmad at-Talali] always remained in this high quality of guide, spreading the light of Divine Truth in the hearts of the Sufis, and was the father healer of sick hearts for thirty-nine years. We knew no other guide who, like him, had instructed people [in the ṭarīqa] for such a long time and at such an advanced age.

Of the unusual deeds he performed.  One day, while Shaykh Mahmud al-Almali was teaching his murids in Qakh, the nobles of the village of Almalo rebuked him: ‘You are engaged in teaching outsiders but pay no attention to the best people of your native village. You look at the natives of other villages and leave [unheeded] your compatriots. How can that be?’ He immediately responded in a dignified and brilliant manner: ‘You exalt yourselves over me and deny me as shaykh, you are those who have found yourselves on the side of the enemies of Allah Almighty, you are on the path of serving the [lowly passions] of the soul [nafs] and the devil, so I have abandoned you and alienated you from mercy. I am showing you an instructive example of the people of other villages: do they not command respect?’ They replied yes. While the shaykh was talking to them, they were guests in his house. Then [Mahmud al-Almali] said: ‘O Mullah Ahmad, appear to me, my son, in one hour!’ At this no one heard him except those present at the meeting and listening to his instructions. [Ahmad al-Talali] appeared to him a quarter of an hour after he had summoned him. Mahmud al-Almali exclaimed: ‘O my son! Why did you not come at once?’ [Ahmad] answered: ‘When you called me, I was at home getting dressed. [I had performed full ablution [ġuṣl][13] in the Kurmukh River, so I did not come at once. Besides, the distance between Almalo and Qakh is so great that even a good horseman can cover it only in two hours.’ Those present marvelled, looked at each other and discussed in amazement. Shaykh Mahmud Afandi said: ‘Eat, Mulla Ahmad, my son, satiate yourself!’ For long [Ahmad al-Talali] had not eaten anything, so that his soul was ready to leave his body. Then, he asked permission [from his shaykh to return] and the latter allowed him to do so. At that late hour, in the pitch-dark night, [Ahmad] set out [for home] without staying till morning. Then the shaykh turned to those present and said: ‘Have you seen the essence of Ahmad al-Talali! You have witnessed [the manifestation of] his sincerity and love. Look at yourselves, that is all! Do not censure me, but censure yourselves.’ Thereupon they ceased such speech.

Of the unusual deeds he performed. One month before the demise of [his] shaykh, the following happened to him: While performing the collective midday prayer in his house, he performed as the Imam before his Muslim brothers. At the third prostration, he remained standing for quite a long time, about half an hour. And when he finished his orison (sālāt), he felt embarrassed in front of those praying with him because of the long time it had taken. After they had all dispersed, he said to his wife: ‘By Allah, today I was embarrassed in front of people because of standing for a long time during the prayer (namāz). Several ships that were sailing on the Black Sea between Constantinople and Jeddah began to sink. They were calling me for help. I immediately went there and rescued them. That is what I spent [that time] doing.’ May Allah show mercy to him and spread the light of His Essence upon us!

We have enumerated his virtues, his fine and perfect qualities. If we were to describe all his amazing miracles [karāmāt], it would take a huge book. But we will leave this [activity] for fear of being long and making the reader bored.

After his death, besides the aforementioned hajj wife, he was left with two sons and four daughters. One of the sons of the worthy scholar is the noble Mulla Muhammad Afandi and the other the most excellent of his contemporaries and the most able and knowledgeable of his brothers, Mulla ‘Abd-Allah. As for his daughters, two of them are married and the other two still young — may Allah Almighty prolong their lives and make them a memory for us of our teacher and a source of emanation, Ameen!

Our shaykh al-Talali — may Allah have mercy on him — moved to His mercy on the nineteenth night of the month of ḏū’l-qaʿda after four hours, chiselled out on the path of glory by the date 1321.[14] A thousand and five hundred men from the same society came to him for the funeral prayer. But who did the prayer for him afterwards, before or after his burial, no one counted, only Allah knows their number. He was sixty-three years old, as the Messenger of Allah — peace and blessings of Allah be upon him — and at the same age the two shaykhs Abu-Bakr and ‘Umar — may Allah Almighty be pleased with them — died. It cannot be conveyed how many people come to his family members and relatives to pray and honour [him]. Nothing comes out of them but weeping and wailing and crying out loudly. During the first five days until ten days after his death [for the condolences] five hundred or more men came daily. For forty days [after his death] five hundred men came to his noble grave from morning till evening. Eventually the day of his death became a memorable day. Before that there was not a day as famous [as this one]. And may Allah show mercy unto him and send down for us from the blessings of his shining and his breathing!
